Stamp Collection 2012

Adelaide Central School of Art - Honours

The Stamps Collection series have become playful interactions with memory.  The original collection belongs to my mother, which she kept as a child.   The stamps were gathered from postal communication between family in Australia and those overseas.  Placing myself within the image of the stamp furthers the idea of a fabricated world, as I enter history in multiple places.  I’ve also permitted humour to feature liberally within this work as the source imagery holds a less sentimental connection.  Therefore allowing myself a significant amount of freedom when becoming each character.
Presented as a collection, this is important for a proper reading of the work.  Multiple versions of a similar theme are needed to understand the intent of the project.  Presented behind sheets of Perspex, this conjures up notions of a precious object, also relating back to the plastic sleeves in which collected stamps are stored.
